Well I have put up about 1000km since I last reported and the bike is still running fine ao the new Carb the shop fitted seems to have done the job.
I think it was a case of a "sledgehammer to crack a nut" but who cares the bike was under warranty so it was probably the best solution for me.
I believe the problem was related to vacuum problems as it was so similar to the tank lid and petcock problems, maybe the old carb had some problem in this area, the old vacuum line got replaced with the new Carb.
Anyway thanks to Patrick and Peter for the follow-ups, hope you are both motoring well.
